Last week the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and NANR organized an engaging discussion on Dutch foreign policy and Dutch-Russian relations. The event aimed to give alumni an opportunity to hear expert opinions and debate long-standing and recent developments between the two countries.
The evening began with a talk by Professor Duco Hellema (Utrecht University), who gave an overview of Dutch foreign policy from the times of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands until the present day. Professor Hellema also provided a theoretical framework for analyzing the shifts in Dutch policy in the international realm. Together with Ron van Dartel, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Russia, they chatted about recent developments in Russian-Dutch relations. Predictably, the discussion elicited many questions from the audience. In particular, alumni asked the speakers to comment on the current refugee crisis in Europe and the bilateral year between Russia and The Netherlands.
In the end Jerke Verschoor, the director of Nuffic Neso Russia, thanked both speakers. He recognized Ambassador van Dartel for his constant support of Neso Russia and NANR activities and presented him with a photo album signed by NANR Alumni Board members. The ambassador is leaving Russia this summer.
